Pub history

Alfred Wainwright (or ‘AW’) authored the Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells (1955–66), seven volumes of hand-written books and maps, the standard reference to 214 of the Lake District’s fells. Born in Blackburn, then moving to Kendall (northeast of Haven Lakeland) in his 30s, AW was the borough treasurer there until his retirement in 1967, with a pedestrian area in Kendal named in his memory – Wainwright’s Yard. His ashes are scattered at Haystacks, one of his favourite fells.
