Pub history
The Bluff Inn takes its name from its location. The popular inn sits above Bluff Beach, next to the mouth of the Hayle Estuary, where the river flows into St Ives Bay, an area which kiteboarders call The Bluff. The path alongside the pub slopes down past the lifeguard station to Bluff Beach, ‘slope’ being the clue to the inn’s name, which is on a bluff, rather than a cliff. Whereas a cliff is a steep, nearly vertical, rock face (with little or no slope), a bluff is more of a steep sloping bank.
