1664 Bière on draught – new world beer
All Wetherspoon pubs across the UK and Ireland will be introducing a new premium draught lager. The beautifully crafted French premium lager, 1664 Bière (4.6% ABV), is being added to the company’s draught beer range.

Pub history
Pub signs originated in Richard II’s 1393 Royal Act: ‘whosoever shall brew ale in the town with the intention of selling it must hang up a sign’. They were used instead of lettering, many coming from the Bestiary – a compendium of ‘beasts’. It was believed that the Unicorn’s horn could detect poison, cleansing drinks. It could be that this inn was named in the early 17th century, in James I’s reign (who visited Ripon in 1617), when the mythical horned beast was added to the royal coat of arms.
