The Old Angel

The Old Angel was one of Doncaster’s best-known inns. King James I stayed there in 1603, followed by the Duke of York and the Prince of Wales, in 1778. Eighty years earlier, the landlord was Richard Whittaker, who later became Mayor of Doncaster. The Old Angel was demolished in 1846, with the guildhall then built on the site. The New Angel had already opened by then and survived until 1964, when the inn made way for a shopping centre.
