The Charles Henry Roe

For nearly 100 years, buses were manufactured at the east end of Manston Lane. In 1921, on Manston Lane, Charles Henry Roe established his Crossgates Carriage Works, becoming ‘the most successful, well known and long lived of the Leeds bus manufacturers’. His company closed in 1984 and was replaced by Optare, founded by workers from the former company. Bus-manufacturing continued here until 2011, soon after which the works were demolished.
