The Five Stones

Several Roman finds have been unearthed in and around Filey. In 1924, Roman pottery fragments were discovered near what is now Haven leisure park’s main entrance. In 1857, on Filey’s seafront, five large stone blocks were uncovered. These supported a 4th-century Roman signal station, 30 metres high and 14 metres square, topped by a beacon which was lit when invading ships were spotted. The five carved stones are on display in the seafront gardens.
