Pub history
The London Bar
What is now known as London Gatwick Airport began life in 1930 as a private aerodrome, used exclusively by flying enthusiasts. The first commercial flights took off three years later. In 1950, it was designated as London’s second airport. The new Gatwick was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1956. In 1978, it became ‘a transatlantic gateway’. Today, London Gatwick is Britain’s second-largest airport and home to The London Bar.
