Pub history
The Tom Toya Lewis
This young newspaper seller was the hero of the Newport Docks disaster of 2 July 1909. Tom Toya Lewis risked his life to save others and was awarded the Albert Medal, the highest award for bravery in peace time. The pub named after him comprises two buildings of 1894 and 1909. The latter is part of the purpose-built YMCA premises. It replaced earlier rooms used by the association which stood on the same site.
