J D Wetherspoon opened The Shrewsbury Hotel, the first hotel in the company, in 1998. We are located in the heart of Shrewsbury, overlooking the River Severn. The hotel has 22 bedrooms, all en suite, with a shower or bath. All rooms have tea- and coffee-making facilities, complimentary bottled water, Freeview television and unlimited free Wi-Fi (in the bar also). We pride ourselves on our excellent customer service and you will experience a warm and friendly welcome in both our hotel and adjoining pub. Shrewsbury is an historic market town, located within the loop of the River Severn, the town centre having a largely unaltered medieval theme. The town features over 660 historic listed buildings, including several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th century. The local Quarry park is just a short walk, with amazing award-winning gardens and scenic walks along the riverside to the far end of the town. The hotel looks over to the River Severn, where there are many places to relax and explore, including the Sabrina Boat Trip; be sure to book tickets through our reception for your 10% discount.
We are a five-minute walk from the railway station and bus station; please follow the Smithfield Road and we are at the end, opposite the Welsh Bridge.
Those customers using just the pub are no longer allowed any parking in the car park. Automatic number-plate-recognition (ANPR) cameras are in operation. Visitors who are not a hotel guest or who have not been added to the authorised exempt list will be issued with a £75 parking charge notice.Pay-and-display car parks are also located around the hotel both for long and short stay, as well as free on-street parking from 6pm to 8am throughout the town centre. Frankwell main long stay 3–10 hours is £4 and free from 6pm, Sunday and bank holidays £1 up to 10 hours. For more information, please contact the hotel’s reception team.
Local taxis are available. Buses run regularly to all area of the Midlands, plus to the Welsh coast; there are National Express coach pick-up points for London. Nearest airports: 60 miles to Birmingham, 67 miles to Liverpool. Rail links: 54 minutes to Chester; 56 minutes to Birmingham New Street; 1 hour 16 minutes to Manchester; 29 minutes to Crewe; 2 hours 45 minutes to London Euston. Shrewsbury Castle, a red sandstone castle fortification, and Shrewsbury Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, were founded in 1074 and 1083, respectively, by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery. Charles Darwin was born in The Mount in the Frankwell area of Shrewsbury. There are daily Sabrina boat trips on the river, Theatre Severn, museums, churches, stunning parks and walks, leisure centre a five-minute walk, open-top tour bus to Ironbridge through Shrewsbury and unique quirky little shops, as well as main chain stores, many cafés and bistros spread along the cobbled streets and lively nightlife. Shrewsbury is a perfect location for exploring – some places of interest locally are Ludlow, Ironbridge Gorge Museums, Much Wenlock, Ellesmere, Bridgenorth (Severn Valley Railway), local golf courses and much more! A new university to the town opens its doors to students this year. Days out in Wales are also possible, being only 18 miles to the border.
