Many historical structures fill the area, including a city wall founded in Roman times and rebuilt in the 14th century, the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey and a Norman castle.

There is the oldest extant school in the world, The King’s School, and the famous Canterbury Cathedral.

Modern additions include the Marlowe Theatre and the St Lawrence Ground, home of Kent County Cricket Club.

Local transport

Canterbury East and Canterbury West train stations both provide transport to London. Buses run regularly around the local area, helping you to explore the sights of Whitstable and Herne Bay.

From Canterbury East train station, it is a 10-minute walk:

Head north on Canterbury East station’s bridge towards the city walls; take a slight right towards St George’s Terrace; continue onto St George’s Terrance, then turn right onto St George’s Lane. Turn left onto St George’s Street, then right towards Burgate Lane. Keep left to continue on Burgate Lane, then turn left onto Burgate – The Thomas Ingoldsby will be on the right. 

From Canterbury West train station, it is a 15-minute walk:

Head southwest towards Station Road, then take a slight right onto Station Road. At the roundabout, take the first exit onto St Dunstan’s Street and continue to High Street. Turn left onto Marcery Lane, then right onto Butter Market. Turn right onto Burgate – The Thomas Ingoldsby will be on the left. 

From Canterbury Bus Station, it is a three-minute walk:

Head northeast on St George’s Lane towards St George’s Terrace. Turn left onto St George’s Street, then right towards Burgate Lane, keeping left to continue on Burgate Lane. Turn left onto Burgate – The Thomas Ingoldsby will be on the right.
