Pub history
The Windlesora
Windsor began as the Saxon settlement of Windlesora, meaning ‘a river bank with a windlass’ (lifting device). The public house is part of a block of retail units, offices and flats named Consort House, after Prince Albert, husband and consort to Queen Victoria. The pub is in William Street which was laid out in 1831 and named after the Queen’s uncle, William IV. Several of Windsor’s streets are named after the king and his wife – Queen Adelaide.
